What are a domain name and hosting, and what determines the annual cost?

The two concepts most often confused when having a website built are the domain name and hosting. One is your site’s address; the other is where your site’s files live. Choosing both correctly directly affects speed, security and annual cost.

The difference between a domain and hosting

A domain name is the address visitors type into the browser — for example marinosajans.com.tr. Hosting is the always-online server where the site’s files, images and database are stored. Think of the domain as your home address and hosting as the house itself.

Both are usually rented annually and must be renewed every year. If renewal is forgotten the site becomes unreachable; if a domain is left unrenewed for a long time, someone else can register it.

02

.com or .com.tr?

For businesses serving Türkiye, the .com.tr extension gives a local trust signal. Since .com.tr domains can now be registered without documents, the process has become easier. Brands addressing international audiences usually prefer .com.

If possible, register both the .com and .com.tr of your brand name — make one the main address and redirect the other to it. This protects the brand.

  • Choose a short, easy-to-type name
  • Avoid Turkish characters and hyphens where possible
  • Keep it consistent with your brand name
  • Set renewal to automatic payment
03

How to choose the right hosting?

The cheapest package is not always the most economical choice. A slow or frequently down server both loses visitors and hurts Google rankings and ad quality scores.

For corporate brochure sites, quality shared hosting is usually sufficient. High-traffic e-commerce sites need a stronger server, regular backups and responsive technical support.

  • Is an SSL certificate included?
  • Are regular backups taken?
  • Is the server close to your visitors?
  • Can corporate email be added?
04

What determines the annual cost?

The domain fee varies by extension. The hosting fee is set by disk space, traffic, number of email accounts and support level. These items are separate from the design fee and recur every year.

When collecting quotes, ask for the first-year and renewal prices of the domain, hosting, SSL and corporate email separately. On our website pricing page you can see what the packages include and the fees for extras such as corporate email.

05

Who should own them?

The domain must be registered in the business’s name, and you should hold the management credentials. This is the only guarantee that you will not lose your address and emails when you change agencies or developers.

Conclusion

The bottom line

A domain is your site’s identity and hosting its foundation; choosing both for speed, security and ownership rather than cheapness is the most economical path in the long run.
