What is Google Ads quality score and how do you improve it?

Quality score is a 1–10 value showing how useful Google considers your ad for the person searching. A low score means paying more for the same click and being shown less. The good news: the causes of a low score can usually be identified and fixed.

01

Why does quality score matter?

Quality score is a diagnostic tool shown at keyword level. The score itself does not enter the auction directly; but the factors that compose it affect your ad’s rank and the amount you pay per click.

In practice, an advertiser with a high score can pay less for the same position as a competitor, or get more clicks with the same budget. Improving quality score is therefore the most direct way to raise efficiency without raising budget.

02

The three components of the score

For each keyword Google evaluates three components as “above average”, “average” or “below average”. Seeing which component is weak shows you where to start.

  • Expected click-through rate: how likely your ad is to be clicked for this search
  • Ad relevance: how closely the ad copy matches the searched term
  • Landing page experience: how easily the visitor finds what they were looking for on the page
03

The most common mistake: sending ads to the homepage

The problem we encounter most often in the accounts we manage is sending every click from different searches to a generic homepage. A person searching “website prices” who cannot see prices on the first screen goes straight back — and Google rates the landing page experience as low.

The solution is to route price searches to a page with pricing, and service searches to that service’s page. For example, a pricing page where the price-sensitive visitor sees packages on the first screen directly improves this component.

04

Split ad groups by search intent

Grouping price, service and region searches into the same ad group forces a single ad copy to address all of them. Separating keywords with similar intent into their own groups raises both ad relevance and click-through rate.

Each group’s headlines should contain the searched phrase, and descriptions should carry a benefit or offer specific to that search.

  • Price searches: pricing page and price-focused ads
  • Service searches: the relevant service page
  • Region searches: headlines mentioning the region
  • Irrelevant searches: negative keywords
05

Page speed, mobile experience and patience

Pages that open slowly, are hard to read on mobile or lack a contact button weaken the landing page experience. Compressing images, reducing unnecessary code and showing phone and WhatsApp buttons on the first screen help both the score and conversions.

Changes usually take a few weeks to reflect in the score, because Google evaluates historical performance. If you would like us to review your campaign’s quality scores together, take a look at our Google Ads management service.

Conclusion

The bottom line

Quality score is not a punishment but a roadmap: when you connect the right search to the right ad and the right page, the score rises and click costs fall.
